Chiang Mai's HOT Spot: Did It Live Up to the Hype?
Hey guys! Remember the CRAZY popular Mae Kha Canal in Chiang Mai? It was like the IT spot when it first opened, with tons of people strolling the night market. Well, it's been almost 2 years since I vlogged about it, and things MIGHT have changed.
So, is the Mae Kha Canal still a tourist magnet, or has the hype died down? Did the shops stay the same? Did they add anything cool? I'm heading back to check it out and see what's happening there now!
Come along with me to see if the Mae Kha Canal is still HOT or NOT!

Today, I'm taking you to one of my favorite areas in Chiang Mai. It's a bit different from the rest of the city. You won't see many fancy condos or modern rooms here. That's why not many tourists or expats come to this area. But who knows? Maybe it will be the next big thing! What makes this place special is its local feel and super cheap prices. At first, it seemed perfect for long-term digital nomads, but as I looked closer, it might not be as great as I first thought. I take a walk around Chiang Mai and talk about what this means for those who want to work remotely in Thailand for the long term. On a positive note, the new Visa Exempt rules are awesome! Tr...

nice house, but not enough land
One of your best vlogs mate. I love your openness and honesty. These things need to be said and very real for me as I will be in Chiang Mai within months.
Wasnt too bad, was way too hot when we visited.
Cool little spot Wayne,.. some nice bits and bobs,... and decent tucker,... Are you able to walk along the river ping. ?? If so any good ?? All the best 🙂
Bushgarden there is where a VERY famous downstairs bar of the 1960s & 70s was (can't remember the name - can anyone else?). The area that you thought was market is the Arab or Middle Eastern area.
I remember when you only had 1k subs. I'm from the UK too. It has advantages, but the trajectory is down. Nothing has improved in the past 10 years and it's only going to get worse. By all means go see family etc. but I wouldn't have the UK in your long term plans. Also, critically, the GBP is in a macro decline, so even if you generate good income from the UK, the £ is losing value.
First went to BKK in 87 and it WAS a nightmare to get around. The SkyTrain made a huge difference in the mid to late 90s. I spent 7 years in CM and loved it. But now in BKK and I travel to many other cities in the world and I would say BKK is one of the easiest large cities in the world to get around now. So convenient for everything!
🚄🚄🚅🚅🚎🚞🚌✈✈✈🛫🛫🛫🛫🛫🛫🛬🛬🛬🛬🛬🛬🌄🌄🌅🌅🏡🏞🏜🏕🏕🗻🗻
Always be careful to live near by the airport. Terrible noise of landing and seating aeroplanes
Yes, that's right. It's not to bad at this place.
...And 10 out of 10 times a white guy went down to Nong Hoi area looking for those ladies. 😂
🤣🤣🤣 Probably
Great vid cheers
Thanks 🙏
Not feeling that place...
It was a bit cramped. Not bad though, especially with everything on site.
I really love your videos mate! As an American who visited Thailand whilst in the Navy, your content brings back very good memories of a country that is underappreciated! Thanks for the work
Thank you buddy! Great to have you on the channel.
F me running. If you don't need luxury, these are great crash-pads. Eat, drink and be merry for less than $15 per night in the hotel!
For sure buddy 👍
Maybe it's just me but a grand a week is a bit more than holiday mode. That is a serious problem and won't go away when he gets home. Have you considered you were being an enabler?
Yes, he was going hard!! He came back again, but I've not seen much of him. He will soon learn, especially he he wants to stay here long term. Thanks
One is my favourite markets there. Totally agree with you about the cheap food tasting better.
This is one of the best markets, for sure. Yes, some of the cheaper food is a lot better.
Hey Wayne! Tire chair/table quite ingenious! Like what they've done with the area; good mix of vendor services too. It's a "go to" area for casual shopping and relaxation. Quite nice to just chill there. Entertaining video! Continued good fortune, health and safe travels.
It's a good little area to get a beer or chill for an evening. Thanks Walt.
Little india Yes🎉😂
Happy Days 👍
Nice video wayne , action in Thailand starts in the evening good to see some more places .
It sure does buddy. Cheers 👍
In a place like Thailand, it would be very hard for me to have a GF. It limits your sex options to just one individual. I like to sample new flesh every day. Variety is the spice of life. Thai girls would call you a "butterfly", going from flower to flower. Best of all the freedom from commitment is priceless. 😄
The original Walk About Wayne returns. Enjoying fun places and people in Chiang Mae. That little jewel of a city of yours has a lot to offer. Made me think of the times early on when you often had to visit the 3 Kings. This was a good show Wayne. A happy show. It's what you do best!
Thank you mate! Ahhh the 3 kings days, they was good times. I've just done another vlog around the 3 kings.
Safety barrier! Come on mate you are going woke 😂 There’s no barriers on riverbanks or down the beach!!
I guess so buddy 👍 Whatever woke means. I haven’t got the foggiest pal. I do keep Meaning to look it up though, but can never be bothered.
@@WalkAboutWayne That’s OK then ! 👍😀
@@WalkAboutWayneGood call stay away from all the political horsecrap here in the west
“ smells like Labrador … “ Cheech & Chong ✌️🤣 Chilled area for sure , I think it will eventually get busy ? - live on the bike , luv it - happy days ✔️👌👋👍✌️🙏
Yes mate Cheech & Chong. Taste like Labrador. 🤣🤣🤣. Yes it gets really busy sone nights .
Another Bobby Dazzler!!! You got some food in also..... appreciate you keeping me from being totally bored at work😊
Thanks mate! Hope the vlog helps the time go quicker buddy.
Great vid Wayne!! Appreciate your work showing us around the beautiful city of Chiang Mai! Looks so lovely and peaceful in the evening. You’re so lucky to be living there 😃🙌!
Thank you Jim 👍
10: 34 is the same squatting girl stroking the cat. You are being followed Wayne.
🤣🤣🤣
Wonder what the girl was doing at 9:09. Squatting in the mud puddle.
I miss everything, I'll have to look back at that.
I went there right from the beginning a few times but to tell you the truth it gets old quickly. It is an improvement that's for sure.
Yes, it's not something I would do all the time. It's looking the best it's ever looked though.
Looks good. Actually not much street noise. Chiang Mai airport is not that busy. Coffee and restaurant on site is handy.
Yes, it's still a great place for the price.
That's a very nice walk, I loved it, I would not love it if ut was crowded though but that was just perfect. Beautiful, relaxing, and very well manicured, the old dude smoking a blunt was just a classic man. Did it smell like a skunk? That's the good stuff.🤣 I'm def visiting that canal, that is quite a relaxing refuge when not crowded, aroi mahk Wayne.
Yes, I have to admit, it's not so pleasant when it's ram packed. I picked a very good day. The blunt smelled like something else had been mixed with it. He looked happy though haha. Cheers mate.
Great vlog Wayne. Thanks for showing us around and updating us 👍🏼😃
Nice one Kashif 👍
Got me thinking something you said " still no safety barrier" I would say unlike the west there more aware of the dangers and respect the environment unlike the kids in the west wrapped up in cotton wool and are entitled without living any sort of life
That's true 👍
Good chilled Vlog mate, nice spot on the Canal. i cracked up when the LB's said come here at the market.
🤣🤣🤣 Thank you mate
I really like that canal location, Wayne. It has a nice charm to it, especially in the evening. Just watch your step after a few beers. 🍺🍺🍺🤕
It's a nice place, they have Mae it look good. Yes, it could get tricky after a few beers. 🤣
A real pleasant early evening vlog with a nice stroll along the waterway ( I agree with you about having a fence between the path and the water , much safer especially if you'd had a few singhas 😊 ) The people's all seem very friendly down that way
Thanks! Yes, after a few beers it could be a problem. It's a nice place. Thanks
Been offered a rental house near makro so doing a bit of homework on the area looks lovely. However I don't speak thai
Phayao is one the the best places I've been. It does feel very remote though. The Expats that do live here, eat at the restaurants near the lake. Some great places to get a coffee also. Learning some Thai would be important to live in Phayao I think. Amazing place.
Yes Wayne, we like the night vlogs. Congradulations on the 20K as well. Take Care.
Thank you, mate 👍
That was fun Wayne and made me homesick for CM. Will be good to get back there. It will be my pleasure to buy you a nice dinner. Look back at 11:40 on your video where there was a girl getting her picture taken on the yellow bridge. Loo at that evening sky behind her. Man I miss that Thailand sky! Absolutely beautiful.
Thanks John! I can't remember the sky, so I'll have to have a look. Hope you can get back soon buddy.
Always think having 2/3 coffee shops you like close is important, same with cafes. Makes it feel homely if you can stroll to both.
Yes, it's a massive plus having the cafe, restaurant and shop at this place. It's not a bad deal once you consider everything on offer.
@@WalkAboutWayne Saw another review of a larger unit at the same place, not much more $$ but a lot nicer. Still prefer to have two coffee/cafes to go to (as a minimum). You get to know more locals, and if one goes ordinary you have a back-up without having to ride/cab. IMO
I'll have to check that canel out for sure. I'm sure it was those guys I saw playing when i had a wander down Wualai last night.
The canal is looking good IMO, nice to have a drink or have a stroll. Yes, I think those guys do the weekend markets also.
@@WalkAboutWayne So many good places around Chiang Mai. Went out to Dantewada for the first time yesterday, well worth it on a hot day 🌞
I’ve rarely seen Thais smoking reefer. It’s almost always foreigners.
